Democracy works best when everyone has meaningful access to government. That begins with information, good and useful information.
But, in today's technology and capital intensive marketplace, "We, the People" are often forced into the debate at a disadvantage. Because information is not really free and not necessarily reliable, people often lack the knowledge to meaningfully participate in our society.
LCG Communications' mission is to give progressive grassroots groups, labor, advocates, and others a competitive edge in the public debate. Even on a tight budget, we are able to give our clients wide access to the means to develop and change public opinion.
On Wednesday, September 16th, the Majora Carter Group (www.majoracartergroup.com), headed by Bronx native/environmental justice activist/MacArthur “genius” Majora Carter, sponsored the very first Uptown Power Girl event. Its purpose: to create a series of murals around the South Bronx that depict positive images of women and girls. The event raised $30,000 and the house was packed! Hollywood stars and Bronxites Kerry Washington and Joy Bryant were on hand to help give out awards to amazing women from the Bronx. Displaced Films (Sir! No Sir!) and Northern Light Productions (Unfinished Symphony), along with the Iraq Veterans Against the War Winter Soldier Project have produced and launched the web series "This is Where We Take Our Stand." The series tells the story of last year's Winter Soldier Iraq/Afghanistan hearings from the inside -- going beyond the testimony to the people whose lives, experiences, and struggles made that historic event possible. The six-episode series has been posted consecutively. Each episode presents key testimony and tells a vital and powerful part of this story. Click here to view all the posted episodes. You can help the vets by passing the link around – we’re watching as the series goes increasingly “viral.”
LCG is pleased to announce that the Shirley Chisholm Project of Brooklyn Women’s Activism, housed at Brooklyn College, has joined the LCG family of organizations. As some of you may know, Shirley Chisholm was the first African American woman elected to Congress and she hailed from Brooklyn, of course! We’re helping the organization -- which will offer material about women’s activism in Brooklyn in addition to archival material about Shirley Chisholm -- prepare for the official website launch on or about Shirley Chisholm Day, November 24th (Chisholm’s birthday). Check back for updates soon!
We’re also happy to welcome Pratt Area Community Council (PACC). PACC, based in Central Brooklyn, will be celebrating its 45th anniversary this year, and will have a community celebration on Wednesday, October 21st. Click here to find out more.
